What are ACT and CBT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), is increasingly used for the treatment of chronic pain. ACT and CBT are recommended by the American Psychological Association as evidence-based treatments for chronic pain, including fibromyalgia.

These approaches have been extensively tested, studied worldwide and reliably demonstrated to be effective in improving psychological symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, as well as improving physical functioning and emotional well-being.

ACT teaches acceptance and mindfulness strategies for uncontrollable symptoms, along with engagement and behaviour change strategies to prevent symptom flares, increase quality of life and improve physical and emotional functioning. CT guides people to change their expectations and move from pain elimination to managing and living as well as possible with their pain.

CBT helps people become aware of inaccurate or negative thoughts so that they can see difficult situations more clearly and respond to them more effectively. CBT helps people learn to better manage stressful life situations. CBT often involves learning and practising techniques such as relaxation, coping, resilience, stress management and assertiveness.
